about

Dòmhnal Daolaig is a story I have in the Gàidhlig about a man, Alasdair Òg whose wife is taken by the wee folk just after giving birth. She is rescued from their fairy procession by Dòmhnal Daolaig, with whom she lives for two years, with no memory of her former life. Thanks to her husband recognising her shawl that Donald takes to market, they are reunited, but she makes a new suit of clothes every year to send to Donald in thanks. Rena Gertz sings A Phiutharag 's a Phiuthar to add a companion story. It's a story of two sisters, one singing to the other from fairyland. “I heard this song sung by Margaret Stewart, and fell in love with the tune. Her words, however, were of a murder ballad, so I picked the words sung by Flora MacNeill from Barra, used Margaret’s tune, and slowed it down a bit.”
